-- it was earlier than that. when i began at cnn in january 2010, it was a week after gabby giffords had been shot. and i was completely shocked, not just by what happened to her and the six people who got killed but the fact that after a week of mourning and general chatter about a debate about gun control, nothing happened. so a congresswoman could be nearly murdered, at pointblank range by a deranged man way bunch of firearms and no action was taken to tray to prevent this happening again. and from then on, there was a pattern of these massacres and mass shootings. they came with alarming reg layerity in america and nothing ever got done. i really exploded after the aurora movie theater shooting. because there you had a young man who had acquired four firearms perfectly legally, including one of these ar15 assault rifles. me then got 6,000 rounds of amnition anonymously on the internet, and he had dressed up as the joker and gone to a movie theater and gunned down a record number of americans in one single shooting, 70 people, and killed 12. and it was an event of such ferocity and horror, i th

on homosexuality that he preached in the 1990s. cnn's belief blog is on the phone with me now and eric, this is all over something he said what, 20 years ago? >> at least. mid 90s is when he preached this sermon. it's important to point out that a lot of people were upset when this sermon first circulated earlier in the week and pointed out he thought homosexuality was a sin and something that keeps people from god and comes short of the mark of god's best plan for people's life were some of the words from that sermon and he thought people could change their behaviors and attitudes about homosexuality through coming to jesus. that's a fairly common or a boiler plate mainstream evangelical in the 1990s when he delivered that. since then we have seen a number of shifts on their position and go more towards the position that said orientation is not something you choose. however, we have drew his acceptance of the president's invitation of the benediction. he for the last decade or so has been one of the biggest voices on endying global slavery at least in the christian community and didn't want it to

"the new york times." plus the newest member of our cnn family jake tapper, anchor and chief washington correspondent. welcome to you all. jake tapper, first of all, welcome to the cnn family. as i think wolf blitzer told you earlier, you just have to work hard, keep your nose clean and let wolf deal with the work. that's what i tend to do. a fascinating day in many ways in washington as they have been a lot recently. the president seemed to me to be a man who realizes he probably hasn't achieved enough to guarantee his legacy whatever he sees that to be. he looked pretty determined, pretty up for a fight and laid out a radical plan as many are seeing that has been much more liberal than in the past. as if to say, right, this is me and i'm going to go for it. what was your reading of it? >> i think we have a different tone from president obama than we have in the past. there's an evolution of what he said in the democratic convention where he talked about there are no blue states, no red states, just the united states. a more assertive, bolder, if you will, version of that, except he is

time. >>> better news this morning about the flu. cnn's elizabeth cohen got a look at new numbers out from the cdc, numbers set to officially be released later today. the number of cases are actually down with 24 states reporting high levels of flu last week, compared to 29 the week before. however, there were two more pediatric deaths, bringing the total to 20 and by pediatric deaths we mean children of course. in chicago, flu patients are overwhelming the city's already strained hospitals though with still quite the outbreak there. here's cnn's ted rowlands. >> no nausea at this point. >> reporter: deborah cross started feeling sick on monday, three days later she ended up in the emergency room at cook county hospital in chicago, where it was so busy, she had to wait four hours to be seen. >> decided to be safe and come here make sure that everything was okay. >> reporter: several hospitals in chicago this week were forced to reject patients for several hours because of so many flu cases. on monday, 11 different hospitals in the chicago area couldn't handle any more patients. non-li

the runways at salt lake city's international airport to shut down. at least for some time yesterday. cnn's jennifer is live in tennessee for us. >> frio. it is very cold, absolutely. the temperature is 31 degrees. we've been seeing rain come down. of course we're starting to see looks like a little sleet popping into areas across parts of middle tennessee. now keep in mind, we are at the tennessee department of transportation. you can see all the salt back there. well, there is somebody who's in control of the salt. his name is berl tidwell. you have a big job here. of course, last week you had an ice storm that came through. that was a pretty minor one. but now you're ready for this one. tell us how you kind of tackle this storm. i know you do this in two different parts. >> yes. yesterday we put out brine. we geared up for salt. and we're out tonight on our routes if anything happens we're out there ready to go. >> okay. and why do you put the brine down first? i know when you put the salt down, it lowers the freezing point. >> it actually keeps the frozen precipitation from sticking t

in the inferno, nearly half of them college students from the nearby campus. cnn's shasta darlington joins us live from santa maria, brazil. shasta, what can you tell us about these arrests? >> reporter: well, carol, they obviously give us some indication where these investigations are going. there have been a lot of reports that the club simply wasn't prepared for this kind of emergency. perhaps that its license was even expired, that the whole inferno could have been set off by a pyrotechnics show that the band members themselves were putting on. the fact that these people have been arrested certainly gives us some indication that this is the problem. now, i'm just a few steps away from the nightclub kiss where this fire tore out early sunday morning, killing 231 people. the investigators now still going through the clues, combing through the rubble. it's a bright, quiet day. people from santa maria gathered here. this was a different scene just a few hours ago. smoke filled the air when the first firefighters entered the nightclub, where shirtless men were already trying to rescue some of
